In 2002, a Scotch Collie mix shelter rescue from Philippi, WV named Buddy joined our family. We didn’t know his breed at the time, but were convinced that he was the most well balanced dog we had ever known. Every trait from temperament, agility, strength and energy to playfulness, protection/prey drive and companionship, demonstrated that he had it all and in just the right amounts. Years later, we learned of the Old Time Scotch Collie breed and its rich but struggling history. On our own journey to transform our lives from the massive carbon footprint paradigm of our suburban childhoods to permaculture-driven, regenerative organic farmers, we realized the family farm dog was an integral part of our success. The OTSC was essentially bred to be the perfect family farm dog and for us, with aspirations of one day having our own homestead, we hoped, our dream breed. We weren’t wrong.
